The Monsoon Rust Mystery
Why does Riya’s scooter handle turn reddish after one rainy night?

The story
Riya wondered why her scooter handle suddenly had red patches after a rainy night. She thought maybe Chintu had spilled his Fanta again, but he denied it, and Kabir joked that the scooter had a rash. Baba suspected the paint was to blame, blaming the bad weather. Aaji noticed the iron gate had developed similar red patches, while the nearby plastic chair looked untouched. This made everyone wonder why only iron surfaces showed the change, not plastic ones. Aaji explained that rust only happened on iron when both water and oxygen were present, and the monsoon provided plenty of both. Still, everyone was puzzled, could a plastic handle rust in the same way?
The science
Iron rusts due to a process called electrochemical corrosion. When rainwater and oxygen mix on the surface of iron, especially during the humid monsoon, water allows ions to move between different parts of the iron. This creates small electrochemical cells, similar to a battery, causing iron to react with oxygen and form rust. Plastics do not contain iron and do not react like metals, so they never rust. Only iron, with both water and oxygen, will develop reddish rust.

Questions students ask
Why does plastic not rust like iron?
Plastic does not contain iron and does not react with water and oxygen the way iron does. Without iron, plastic cannot undergo electrochemical corrosion, so it does not rust.
What is electrochemical corrosion?
Electrochemical corrosion is a process where metals like iron react with water and oxygen. Rainwater allows ions to move on the iron's surface, causing rust to form, especially during the monsoon.
